Prepare to loosen your belts folks, Pancake Day is almost upon us and boy are we flipping stoked. Whether you’re eating out, making your own or serving a crowd, we hope you plan on pigging out for breakfast, lunch & dinner on these golden fluffy delights. Working in a Restaurant PR in London, we’re here to give you some tips on how to best profit from this nationwide celebration.

Why do we celebrate it?

Pancake Day, a.k.a Shrove Tuesday, falls 47 days before Easter every year, preceding Ash Wednesday. The name Shrove Tuesday comes from ‘shrive’, meaning absolution for sins by doing penance resulting in the tradition of Christians trying to be ‘shriven’ before Lent. Christians would go to Confession and admit their sins to a priest. A bell known as the ‘pancake bell’ was rung to call them to Confession! In America, they call it Mardi Gras which translated into English means ‘Fat Tuesday.’ A fitting name for a day on which we all most likely gain a fair few pounds! Thus, Pancake Day was born – the perfect recipe to use up all fatty ingredients like eggs, milk and sugar before the dreaded 40 days of fasting begins- Lent.
