It’s that time of the week; you’re hungry for some grub and even hungrier to try out something new. Your regular takeaway no longer hits the spot and you’re ready for a fresh gem somewhere in London that will revive those taste buds of yours and provide you with an indulgent atmosphere and some delicious food. Oh how we have just the spots for you, as our team have dined at Royale, The Jolly Butchers, and YeYe’s Noodles and Dumplings this week! Here are some of our weekly highlights that are sure to become your new guilty pleasures.

The Jolly Butchers

Located on Stoke Newington High Street, The Jolly Butchers is an independently run free house pairing wonderful ales, ciders, and beers with stunning Indian food. Having only been open since 2021, The Jolly Butchers have been CAMRA nominated and currently hold the title as one of the Guardian’s Top 10 pubs in Britain. This airy, traditional pub sports arched windows and stripped floors; the long-established works of a great British pub – but don’t let the ’over Britishness’ fool you! The Booma kitchen down at The Jolly Butchers serve authentic, delicious North Indian Cuisine that’ll have you convinced you’ve taken a dive into the city of Delhi!

We recommend starting off your meal with a plate of crispy poppadom’s drizzled with spiced tomato, tamarind, and mango chutney sauce (so refreshing!) along with a pair of seriously flavourful Pudhina Lamb Chops. You can’t go wrong with Jolly Butcher’s creamy Dal Makhani, it’s beautifully sweet with just enough spice. Paired with their soft and tasty Garlic naan you’ll be begging for more! And of course, what is a British pub without a traditional Sunday Roast? Don’t fear, The Jolly Butchers serve up a storm every Sunday keeping it classy with their sage and onion stuffed chicken, crispy roasted potatoes, a delicious homemade gravy and much more.

YeYe’s Noodle and Dumplings

Tucked away on a side street and without a website, you’re likely to only know about YeYe’s Noodle and Dumplings if you’ve walked past it on Liverpool Street, or through word of mouth. The restaurant is small but comfortable, service attentive but not overbearing. The menu isn’t extensive which is the best part, they really know what they’re doing. After the food, it’s the cosy atmosphere and friendly service that we love the most.

Expect chewy, handmade noodles, freshly prepared in an open kitchen, with a few variations in toppings. Don’t leave without ordering the shengjianbao – pan fried juicy pork dumplings. They’re served piping hot and filled with a generous amount of delicious soup, so be careful! We also recommend the handmade sweet potato balls, a delightfully chewy and sweet break from the savoury dishes. Food is brought to you in minutes, so come hungry!

Royale

Based canalside at East London Liquor Co. by Victoria Park in the East End, you’ll find a sweet spot where Head Chef, Lucy Timm, has created a menu inspired by the Provençal ‘cuisine de bonne femme’. This sister restaurant to Leroy Shoreditch provides spectacular dining and an intimate atmosphere that is sure to keep you coming back – and of course, the food! If you find yourself in the mood for some authentic Provençal cuisine and French wine, Royale hits the jackpot.

The menu is small, with a few daily specials, and features only the best of the best to choose from. We recommend you start things off with a glass of Keg Nat paired with Bonilla Crisps and Rosemary and white bean dip. Their crispy duck and pork rillettes served with pickled red currants is most likely our favourite dish; it’s exploding with flavour and carries just the right balance of sweet and salty. The Rotisserie Anjou chicken is the Royale speciality and quite possibly the best chicken we’ve ever eaten … we can safely say you will not be left unsatisfied! This rustic spot is a true gem and well worth a visit; the atmosphere, the service and the food are exquisite and grand in flavour – Royale truly lives up to it’s name.
